Dental bone graft, guided bone regeneration and sinus lift explained by Albanian Dental Clinic: when they are needed, how they are done, risks, downsides and healing time, with DentX Clinic by Dr. Gjergj Dilo in Tirana. General explanations, not a clinical assessment. Albanian Dental Clinic is not a clinic: treatments are performed exclusively by licensed partner clinics.
An implant needs bone around it to hold. After an extraction, after years without a tooth, or after gum disease, the jawbone resorbs (dental bone loss) and in some places is no longer enough. A bone graft adds bone where it is missing, so that an implant can be placed securely.
It is the classic answer for anyone told “you don’t have enough bone”. It is not the only one: for the back of the upper jaw there are also pterygoid implants, which use bone that is already there and skip the wait for a graft. Which route suits your case, or whether neither does, is decided by the surgeon on the CT scan, not by a web page. These are general explanations, not a clinical assessment. Your options when bone is short are laid out on implants with bone loss.
Bone material is added to the deficient area. It can be the patient’s own bone, treated bone of animal origin, or synthetic material: the surgeon chooses according to how much is missing and where.
The grafted material is covered by a membrane that protects it while new bone forms. It is a commonly used technique for small and medium defects, often together with placing the implant or right after an extraction.
It concerns only the back of the upper jaw, where the maxillary sinus sits above the roots. The sinus membrane is gently lifted and bone is placed in the space created. A small lift, done through the same hole as the implant when little bone is missing, is distinguished from a large lift, with a side access, when a lot is missing.
In general: the surgeon measures the bone on the 3D cone-beam CT scan; the graft is done under local anaesthesia; in simple cases the implant is placed in the same session, in larger cases you wait for the new bone to consolidate, usually a few months, and then the implant is placed.
According to DentX Clinic, bone graft and sinus lift are among the options the clinic offers, performed by Dr. Gjergj Dilo, oral surgeon and implantologist. Whether you need them, in what form and with what timing, is for the surgeon to say after seeing your case.
If you search for “bone graft risks” or “sinus lift recovery”, the honest answer is: they depend on how much is grafted, on the area and on the hands. That is why the journey starts with a CT scan and with the doctor in front of you.
The treatment plan and the quote arrive in writing, before any travel, with the timing and the number of trips expected. The whole journey is explained in how it works.
Dr. Gjergj Dilo receives Albanian Dental Clinic patients at DentX Clinic, Tirana, and, according to DentX Clinic, is the surgeon who performs bone graft and sinus lift. You meet him on a videocall before you travel and you find the same person in the chair in Tirana.
His full profile: Dr. Gjergj Dilo. The other advanced implantology options: sedation, immediate loading and flapless, pterygoid implants, zygomatic implants.
A sinus lift is one kind of bone graft, done in the upper back jaw: the sinus membrane is lifted and bone is placed in the space. “Bone graft” is the wider term: it can also be done elsewhere in the jaw. The surgeon says which applies on the CT scan.
It is done under local anaesthesia. In the following days there is swelling and discomfort, generally manageable with what the doctor prescribes. Anyone who is very afraid can ask about sedation.
It depends on how much bone is added: in small cases the implant can go in right away, in large cases you wait a few months. The doctor writes it in your treatment plan, together with the number of trips.
Sometimes yes: in the back of the upper jaw, pterygoid implants use bone that is already there; elsewhere there are shorter or tilted implants. It is an assessment on the CT scan, not a rule.
Both are used. The patient’s own bone integrates well but needs a second site to take it from; materials of animal or synthetic origin avoid that. The choice is the doctor’s, case by case.
The price depends on the amount grafted and on the overall plan: you receive it in writing after the videocall, before you travel. We do not publish figures for procedures that have to be seen case by case.
The treatments are performed by DentX Clinic. Albanian Dental Clinic informs, coordinates and organises the journey.
